A common problem that our patients face, is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects the supporting structures of the teeth – with the most common types being gingivitis and periodontitis. At Dental Excellence Harewood, our specialist periodontist, Imran Sharif can help you cure your gingivitis and manage any periodontics related disease affecting your teeth.
Gingivitis is the most common condition, which many will have heard of before. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum and can be quite easily resolved in its early stages with good oral hygiene measures. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque, and if this is not removed by daily brushing and flossing then it can produce toxins which irritate the gum tissue. At the state of gingivitis, the damage can be reversed as the bone and the connective tissue that hold the teeth are not yet affected. However, left untreated and this can become periodontitis causing permanent damage to not just the teeth, but the jaw as well.
The most common signs of gingivitis include red, swollen and tender gums which bleed, particularly when brushing.
Periodontitis is a more dangerous form of periodontal disease. As the disease progresses, chronic inflammation can cause the bone of the jaw to be destroyed and for teeth to be lost. In many instances, this is a gradual process and takes place over many years and if detected and treated can be halted.
The signs and symptoms of both conditions vary from none at all, to loose teeth and drifting teeth. Why 10-15% of individuals are susceptible to this more destructive condition is not fully understood. Some of the major factors affecting periodontitis include smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, specific strains of bacteria in the plaque, personal stress levels and family history.
